The Then & Now Feature.

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 17, 2012, 3:34 PM

Artists For a Cure Glow Stamp by xgnyc:iconshakecancerplz:

The idea for this feature has developed over the past month or so, triggered by the comments we all get from time to time, like; "'I'll never be able to draw like that" or "I  wish I could learn how to do that".
Also around a month ago I was asked a few questions by a very sweet, polite 16 year old girl on here who was extremely grateful that I took the time to answer her.
To cut a long story short, I've taken this girl under my wing in the hope of giving her the encouragement and feedback she lacks from those around her and also to develop her skills and knowledge to the point where she feels confident enough to experiment and grow on her own.

So, this feature is mainly for those just starting out in the world of graphite along with those doubting that they could ever improve beyond their current level and is just a very small selection of graphite artists I both admire and aspire to become as good as. All were chosen for this feature due to the inclusion of early works in their gallery.

I just wanted to add a link to a great article made by :iconsvenjaliv: last year on this very subject. I know many of you would have seen it at the time but I'm sure there are plenty who haven't and this is a good opportunity to give it another airing. svenjaliv.deviantart.com/journ…

There is also a great contest starting soon aimed at inspiring others. This is being held by :iconofonesoul: who is looking for various forms of contributions and offering a number of chances to win 3 months premium membership for just helping with the contest. There is a lot of information on this and it can be found here: ofonesoul.deviantart.com/journ…

Oh what a great idea and awwwwww you've included little old me!!! (I wanted to do the teary-eyed smiley here, but lost the link to that site you mentioned... Mind mentioning it again???)

I will say that, once I had started and felt quite hopeless, nóthing inspired me more than looking at artist's galleries and seeing their old work and comparing it to what they were doing now. It was a main factor in me actually not quitting after my first attempt!
It's therefore I vowed to myself and the whole of dA (in my I.D.) that I'd upload everything I did here. I will not remove my older works ever. They are an essential part to where I am now. And aside from me wanting to keep an honest track record of what I'm doing, I hope in the future maybe someone, even if just 1 person, can look at that older stuff and feel like they've seen improvement cán be done and continue to draw because of that!
For that same reason I will also always upload works that I feel are 'weaker'. We have good ones, we have lesser ones, regardless of skill. I might leave these out elsewhere, but dA to me is/has become very much a place of learning and that should include all works. It's a combination of ALL tests and homework assignments that make up the final grade, right?

Whoops.
Lengthy.
Sowwy.

Just wanted to express how much I agree with the subject of your feature here!

Some of these are astonishing - it shows what practice and learning can do. Do you think the most effective way to learn is to do a lot of quick drawings, detailed sketches or just to do full on pieces where you are pushing your maximum skill level or a bit of both?

I wish I felt qualified to answer your question but I'd have to say to my mind, there's no best way, there are merits in all those methods and I think we all find what works best for us as we progress. Combining them all I guess would be the ideal and admit, I do far too little sketching which is probably holding me back on improving my freehand skills.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this feature.

great idea for a feature! It's so interesting to see everyone's progress. I hate seeing people say "I could never do that" because I've been there, and I know that if you keep at it, you can. Actually, I wrote an article about all that a while back [link] and just seeing the amount of responses it got confirmed it for me, that there's a LOT of people who feel like that.

Good on you for helping out where you can, that's really nice of you!

I remember your article very well very well as it was so well written and covered much better what I'm trying to do with this feature.
If it's OK with you. I'd love to add a link to that article as it's far too good to just to collect dust in the archives. Also, there are probably many of my new watchers who haven't seen it.

I wasn't trying to make a big thing about the help I'm giving as I know all my friends here put a lot of time into guiding others and I've received no end of help. But with this young girl, I was just struck by the genuine passion she showed and the fact she took the time to listen and work on my suggestions.

Thank you very much for looking. :iconCreepGlpmpPlz:

Sure, go ahead and link away, I don't mind at all! :)

I think it's a lovely thing to do, and I get why, too. It's always cool to see other people sharing your passion, and even better if you get to mentor them and help them out. I love doing that, too. And if it means one more artist in this world developing their talents, that's even better!

You've taken her under your wing? You meant your green froggy arm

Quitting joking, that's very nice of you that you decided to help her. I often try to help people, giving hints and writing tutorials [mainly at my Polish blog]. Some of them are conceited and try to learn to draw in order to boast off, but some of them really love drawing, but lack in faith in themselves and need to be led a bit. So such an idea of comparing what folks can achieve if they work hard, is amazing and comforting

Thank you for featuring as well!
