This is no work of art and quite poorly finished but was made about a year after coming out of a long stay in hospital so I had not held any tools for around 4 years at this point.

Made with cherry, birds eye maple, boxwood and ebony.

You know what? This should have been my job if my father had let me .When I was 14 it was the one and only thing I wanted. I still wish I could learn, but no time, no space and no teacher for that. I just wish I could produce such things with my hands. Never mind, maybe some time I'll go to sculpture.

I love this box and the style of it.
Does not look like being made not having hold tool for 4 years.
Have you made other of these since?

Unfortunately I had to move to a smaller property a couple of years ago so no longer have anywhere to make things. I have all my tools and materials in storage in the hope of being able to start again.
I only started doing the small jewellery boxes as I'm no longer fit enough to work on full size furniture. It's a shame your father didn't allow you to choose your own career as for most of my working life it felt more like a hobby than work as I loved my job.

Thank you for the compliment.:highfive:

This kind of furniture is far more "interesting" (poor vocabulary of mine in english) than industrial cut, it's a shame artist like you can't work when they want to. You must be :steaming: I guess .I really wish you can start again sometime.
May the force be with you :jedi:

I had to give up due to health, but this is a dying art as very few people are willing to pay for hand made furniture and very few kids are willing to start on the low wage of an apprenticeship any more.

It's a pity ! Same thing in France too. :(
The only door is to reach excellence and work for the happy few who still can pay far such a work ... Thats what a friend of mine does, making whole walls of wooden shelves and decoration. He works 6 month to 1 year on a single project.

You wrote the following self assessment with regard to this work of yours: "This is no work of art and quite poorly finished ..."

I think that has got to be the most humble understatement of the year so far on deviantART.

THIS PIECE IS INCREDIBLE!

Seriously ... indeed it IS a work of ART.

Do you know how many artisians cobble together stuff that doesn't even come close to the quality of work / craftsmanship that you've shown in this? And then they sell their work for a nice profit? Even when it really has no artistic merit to it ... there is no element of one's soul or talent into it.

But on the otherhand, you've done so with this and done so quite well.

Some very intricate wood inlaying in this piece as well as a very unique (almost what could be considered as a Rorschach test inkblot-ish design) centerpiece design that *could* be that of a pair of doves -OR- something entirely different (hence the Rorschach suggestion).

Once again, give yourself credit where credit is due.

:)
